One of Azerbaijan's most ancient cities, Sheki rightly enjoys its reputation as the country's architectural gem. Of particular interest to tourists from all over the world is the Palace of Sheki Khans which, built-in 1762, is a rare example of Azerbaijani architecture from the khanate period. To the north of the city are the ruins of the once impregnable fortress 'Gelersan – Gerarsan' ('Come and See') dating back to the 15th-18th centuries. Sheki is also famous for its melt-in-the-mouth local baklava called halva, piti (a stew with vegetables cooked in a clay pot), and the unique sense of humour of its people.
